![]() ![]() Thousand went above and beyond to complete my bone graft with 100% success. I already have very low self esteem because of my birth defect, so to have to resort to a flipper again was not easy. Unfortunately I did not see a dentist for two years, and I have to admit was lacking on self care so my first implant failed and I had to start all over, this time needing a bone graft. I talked with two other periodontists before I found him, and I knew I found the right one! First, I was born with a cleft lip/palate so where that birth defect was, I never had an adult tooth so I had to get an implant when I was younger. He has a passion that radiates out when discussing your dental plan/procedures. Thousand is one of those rare doctors who you can tell genuinely loves what he does. I earned my Master of Science in Dentistry and Periodontics in 2021 after defending my thesis on lateral periodontal cysts at the MUSC Oral Pathology Laboratory. Through my extensive training, I am now confident and proficient with immediate implants, implants in the esthetic zone, ridge and sinus augmentations, soft tissue grafting, traditional and laser periodontal surgery, periodontal regeneration, and IV sedation. Residency allowed me to expound upon the techniques that I began to develop in my dental school education. While there, I had the privilege of serving as Chief Resident in a program that is renowned for its focus on clinical exposure and case difficulty. Upon graduation from dental school in 2018, I matriculated into the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC (MUSC) for my periodontal residency. I quickly found that I enjoyed periodontal surgical procedures and oral pathology. I shadowed the periodontal residents throughout the four year of my dental school curriculum and my interest in periodontics was confirmed. While in dental school, I developed an interest in Periodontics after receiving a soft tissue graft in my own mouth. Similar to my parents and both grandfathers, I attended the Indiana University School of Dentistry. My name is Hailey Wilson McKinley, I received my bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry and psychology from Indiana University in Bloomington. He served as the chief resident during his last year and completed research in the MUSC Pathology Laboratory on gingival cysts of the adult. During his residency, he received extensive training in IV sedation, surgical extractions, complex implant placement, regenerative surgical dentistry including bone, sinus and soft tissue grafting, and the prevention and treatment of advanced periodontal disease. ![]() ![]() Romani attended his three-year post-graduate training at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Upon graduation, he was admitted to the Anschutz Medical Campus, School of Dental Medicine to begin his graduate dental degree. Michael Romani received his bachelor’s degree in human biology with a minor in chemistry from California State University in Fresno. Thousand was accepted into the Implantology Fellowship program where he pursued additional research in bone grafting techniques and expanded his skill set in complex regenerative and prosthetic implant dentistry. As a resident, he researched the effects of bone grafting materials on the sinus floor topography, the variability in root volume as it relates to bone grafting and the effect of various cementing techniques on residual cement around implant restorations.Īfter successful completion of his master’s residency, Dr. Thousand completed his specialty training in periodontics at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, where he received a master’s degree in periodontology. ![]() ![]() From the aspects of sustainable development, the production of these valuable chemicals by applying local resources is more preferred than using ecologically and socially disputed resources. Given the large market demand due to their various applications ( Khor et al., 2017), anaerobic fermentation of dedicated and waste biomass has been intensively studied as an alternative way to produce C6 and C8 ( Kenealy et al., 1995 Steinbusch et al., 2011 Cavalcante et al., 2017 Chen et al., 2017 Khor et al., 2017 Scarborough et al., 2018 Han et al., 2019 Lambrecht et al., 2019). Among others, they can be used as such as antimicrobials ( Woolford, 1975), feed additives ( Khor et al., 2017 Zhou et al., 2019), or to produce fragrances, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, rubbers, or dyes ( Angenent et al., 2016 Chen et al., 2017). The demand for MCCA has been growing due to their wide range of applications in the food and feed as well as chemical industries. For example, palm kernel oil contains 0.2% C6 and 3.3% C8 and coconut oil consists of 0.5% C6 and 7.6% C8 ( Mancini et al., 2015 Orsavova et al., 2015). However, the content of C6 and C8 in these resources is usually very low. MCCA are conventionally derived from plant oils and animal fats ( Bohnet and Ullmann, 2003 Khor et al., 2017). Medium-chain carboxylic acids (MCCA) are carboxylic acids with six to twelve carbon atoms such as caproic (C6) and caprylic (C8) acid. By using separation equipment with a better solid separation efficiency such as decanter centrifuges or belt filter presses this loss could be minimized. Among all separation steps, solid-liquid separation with the filter press caused the major part of the product loss of 21% of each carboxylic acid. Over the whole cascade, 58% of caproic acid and 66% of caprylic acid were recovered from the fermentation broth into the extract. Subsequently, the carboxylic acids were extracted with oleyl alcohol by liquid-liquid extraction with an extraction efficiency of 85% for C6 and 97% for C8. ![]() With both techniques, the dry matter content was reduced from 6.8 to 2.3% and a particle-free product solution was obtained. For clarification of the fermentation broth, a filter press and a ceramic ultrafiltration membrane was used to remove coarse solids and to separate suspended particles and macromolecules from the fermentation broth, respectively. ![]() In this study, the proof-of-principle for a separation cascade for caproic (C6) and caprylic acid (C8) produced in a maize silage-based fermentation process was demonstrated. The downstream processing of the fermentation broth is a particular challenge since the broth has a highly complex composition and low concentrations of the target products. Production of caproic and caprylic acid through anaerobic fermentation of crops or residual and waste biomass has been regarded as an alternative to the conventional ways, where plant oils and animal fats are mostly used. 2Department of Environmental Microbiology, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research–UFZ, Leipzig, Germany.1Biorefineries Department, DBFZ Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum gemeinnützige GmbH, Leipzig, Germany.Maria Braune 1*, Bomin Yuan 1, Heike Sträuber 2, Stewart Charles McDowall 1, Roy Nitzsche 1 and Arne Gröngröft 1 ![]() ![]() Jamal Agnew, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars (8.1%): Agnew, whose speed has stood out, has been a solid find for Jacksonville in free agency. ![]() It might prove that no back is worth a weekly start out of the Tennessee backfield because each has a role, but Foreman is a deeper-league consideration because, by the eye test, he has been the Titans' best Henry fill-in runner.
